SUNSPOTS: What are the dark spots on the Sun? Called ‘sunspots,’ they are temporary regions of reduced surface temperature caused by increased magnetic activity. Solar flares, or outbursts, emanate from sunspots. The NASA/ESA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) mission recorded a giant eruption from this sunspot, throwing out energetic particles that hit the Earth 48 hours later. Such events can disrupt satellite communications, but are also responsible for the dramatic and beautiful phenomena that those living at Earth’s northern and southern latitudes are lucky to observe: the Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis.
