ANCIENT ROCKS, ANCIENT LIFE: This beautiful area in Western Australia is home to some of the most ancient rocks on Earth. Ridge-top outcrops of the 3.45 billion year old Strelley Pool Formation can be seen across the dry Shaw River bed. The formation contains stromatolites, rocky, dome-shaped structures built by communities of microorganisms eons ago when this area was a shallow marine environment. Image Credit: Abigail Allwood
